Primary school pupils are being given the chance to switch on a restored fountain at a Preston park.
Children at schools across Preston have until Friday to enter a competition to turn on the fountain at Miller Park.

The switch-on will take place at 4pm on Sunday August 3.

In addition, the lucky winner will have the opportunity to take a ride in the mayor's car, visit the mayor's parlour, and win a range of trees and plants for their school.

To enter the competition, pupils have to answer five questions about the history of Preston's parks and the winner will be picked at random.

Mayor of Preston, Coun John Swindells, said: "The fountain is an important part of the park's heritage and has been fully restored to its former glory."

Three cheers. The neglect of this fountain has got my goat for more than a decade. Course it cost a few bob, but what shall we do? Demolish it?

We can surrender to the yobs, shut all the parks, sell off all the playgrounds and close all community centres ... or we can try to beautify our city. If we do the latter it's vital that we also look after the park, with proper security patrols and a zero tolerance to anyone found loitering there after dark, or causing damage at any time.

This money could be better spent on adult literacy classes. Don't you agree rocky123?
