Dog walkers and visitors to Morecambe Bay have been keeping their eyes peeled for whale sick.

Last week the Evening Post reported how dog walker Ken Wilman could be in line for a £40,000 windfall after learning that the unusual ‘stone’ his dog uncovered on Morecambe beach was in fact a lump of sought-after whale vomit.

Sperm whale sick, or ambergris, is an in-demand perfume ingredient and can fetch large amounts of cash.

Since then Morecambe’s RNLI has urged the public to take extra care if hunting for whale vomit on the town’s beaches, even though the chances of making a similar find are very slim.

It is understood that Mr Wilman’s discovery hasn’t attracted many people to the town - despite the story making headlines around the world.

However it would appear that regular users of the beach have been paying more attention that usual in case they too discover the whale vomit.

Mark Holley owner of The Breeze Cafe in Marine Road West, Promenade, said: “People walking their dogs than normal and have been looking down at the ground. All the local customers have been talking about it.”

The RNLI is continuing to remind people that Morecambe’s beaches can be dangerous with fast rising tides and shifting quicksand on a day to day basis.

Mike Guy, Morecambe’s lifeboat operations manager said: “We advise the public to read the sea safety notices placed around Morecambe or contact the HM Coastguard for further safety information”.
