A community history research group led by students at the University of Central Lancashire (UCLan) has revealed the importance of Preston Train Station to the city’s history.
Finding that the train station at Preston has been instrumental in bringing the North West into the modern era is just one of the discoveries made by students undertaking UCLan’s Community History Project module within the BA (Hons) History degree programme.
These revelations are brought to the public for the first time at the Harris Library and will be on display for three weeks.
The project has been researched and designed by second year students Emily Matthews, Joshua Bellos, Francis Brady, Alexander Ingram and Oliver Ingram. They became focused on the history of the station after realising the larger size and business of the building compared to similar sized towns and cities .
The team has produced six display boards providing details of the train station’s history, information on it construction, the people that worked there, the architecture of the building itself and the train services it ran.
Emily Matthews said: “The station itself has become of vital importance to the city again this year with the 2012 Preston Guild. Interestingly, the station in its current form is celebrating its 132nd anniversary, and its 7th Preston Guild. “We hope this project will become a journey through the history of the station since its creation in the 1830s until the mid-twentieth century.”
