The legacy of Preston’s Guild celebrations will continue as Preston hosts its own City Games.

Hundreds of businesses are expected to sign up to take part in the one-day event to be held in June on the back of the UK Corporate Games held last year - when almost 5,000 people flocked to the city.

Guild Mayor of Preston, Coun Carl Crompton, said: “This is a fantastic legacy of the Guild and the enormous success of last year’s Corporate Games.

“I would encourage all local businesses to sign up and take part in the Preston City Games.

“Not only is it a chance for people to compete and achieve success in sport, it is a chance for us as a city to show, once again, exactly what Preston can achieve by working together.”

Prestonian and former Olympian Helen Clitheroe is the patron of the games and will be on hand to provide her support and hand out trophies on the day, which takes place on Saturday, June 8.

The event was launched at the University of Central Lancashire’s (UCLan) Westleigh Conference Centre yesterday with dignitaries and local sporting groups.

4,500 participants and 450 officials flocked to Preston in July last year when the city hosted the UK Corporate Games.

Adrian Ibbetson, academic director of sport at UCLan, added: “We see this very much as a legacy from the European City of Sport and Guild year.

“This is an opportunity to further promote participation in sport and physical activity from our business community which has positives for both the individual and the organisations involved.”

The multi-sport one day event is aimed at businesses in Preston and surrounding areas, and will see individuals and teams competing in nine different sports.

UCLan’s Sports Arena and the Sir Tom Finney Sports Centre are the venues for the games, with sports on offer including rugby, rounders, running, netball, football, hockey, badminton and basketball.

The deadline for registration is Friday, May 17.

Registration is £20 per person and you can register online from today by visiting www.preston.gov.uk/prestoncitygames
