Proposals to convert a listed property in the heart of Preston into apartments have been submitted.
The plans for the building in Latham Street in Winckley Square have been put forward to Preston Council by PJE Properties.
Because the building is listed the application outlines that the work would have little impact on the existing structure and appearance of the building.
Aidan Turner-Bishop, of Preston and South Ribble Civic Trust, welcomed the plans to bring the building back to use and said it isn’t uncommon for listed buildings like this to be transformed into flats.
He added: “As long as it doesn’t alter the street scene then good luck to them.
“If it gets people into the town then why not?”
The building has previously been used as three apartments but the proposals seek to permanently convert the building into five flats.
The plans outline that there will be one apartment per floor apart from the ground floor where there will be two split by the communal hallway.
Each apartment has been designed so that it has a separate kitchen and lounge with large bedrooms and en suites to each room.
Although the two ground floor apartments which have smaller floor areas have been designed with kitchens in the living area.
The application states: “The use of the building as a single house is no longer viable as modern standards dictate that a single family in such a building would have excessive running costs and minimal amenity space in direct relation to the size and cost of the property
“The property is in need of investment and by providing the amount of apartments specified the development can proceed benefiting the area
“The number of apartments proposed is not excessive and generous spacious layouts have been achieved.”
A heritage appraisal submitted also added: “The building is grade II listed, constructed in the period between 1858 and 1869, and provides physical evidence of Preston’s historic residential development and expansion during the Victorian period.”
