Plans for fire hit church
Plan: The former church
Plans to bring a former church gutted by a fire back to life as student accommodation look set to be approved.
Proposals to reconstruct and alter the Former Ethical Spiritualist Church in Moor Lane, Preston, to create 12 flats over four floors will go before Preston Council’s planning committee next week.
The plans would see eight one bedroom flats and four five bedroom flats with en-suite facilities and a separate kitchen and dining room at the rear created.
The former church was devastated by a fire earlier this year. It was left with just the four exterior walls standing after a fire broke out on January 30.
Prior to that it had been standing empty for more than a decade.
The front and back of the church would essentially remain the same. The sides would have bay windows introduced with obscure glazing on the main forward facing windows.
Cycle provision and a bin storage area would be located to the south west side, with the bins taken down the side of the property to Moor Lane on collection days.
And there would be disabled access to one of the front ground floor flats accessed from a passageway to the north east side of the building.
A report to go before councillors states: “The proposed development would bring a badly fire damaged building in a sustainable location in close proximity to the city centre and the university campus back into use.
“Although objections were received, these relate to private civil issues rather than planning considerations.”
The committee meets at 10am on Monday at the Town Hall.
