Officer to retire after 30 years
Latest news on lep.co.uk
A police union official is stepping down after 30 years in the service.
John O’Reilly’s role as chairman of the Police Federation, which represents 3,300 officers at Lancashire Police, finishes today ending three decades as an officer and eight years as a union leader.
He will be replaced by vice-chairman Rachel Baines.
Insp O’Reilly said: “I have absolutely no regrets about my 30 years in the police, I have loved every bit of it.
“There have been some grim moments, but also some wonderful times where I have felt I have made a contribution.”
He added that members of the public expected police officers to be “social workers” and urged changes to make the profession “less risk averse.”
Insp O’Reilly said: “There is too much emphasis on rehabilitation and not enough on sanction and to my mind the police service should be less risk-averse.
“But regardless of all that I’ve had a tremendous career and I wouldn’t have swapped it for anything.”
