A former Nurse of the Year finalist has joined Lancashire Care NHS Foundation Trust as the new executive director of nursing.

Hazel Richards, who has more than 20 years service in the NHS, will be responsible for professional leadership, clinical governance, risk management, health and safety, and patient, service user and public involvement in her new role.

Heather Tierney-Moore, Lancashire Care’s chief executive, said: “We are delighted to welcome Hazel to the trust.

“She brings with her a wealth of experience in leading the development and improvement of nursing services and she will also bring a range of skills to our board to help us to continue to improve the quality of the health and wellbeing services that we provide.”

In 2011, Hazel was a finalist for the Nursing Times Nurse of the Year award for her work and leadership on understanding and enhancing patient experience.

In 2010, she was awarded the Florence Nightingale Leadership Scholarship which has led her to study Managing Healthcare Delivery at the prestigious Harvard Business School in Boston. Hazel said: “I am delighted to have been appointed to Lancashire Care and am looking forward to the challenges ahead.”
