Lifeboat crews at Fleetwood have made the second highest number of rescues from the waves in a record breaking year for the service in the north.

Royal National Lifeboat Institution crews in the north of England saved a record ,1237 people from the waves, an increase of 3% on the previous highest number recorded in 2003, new figures have shown.

And crews at Fleetwood made the second highest number of rescues in the region, launching 93 times and saving 81 people.

Their total was beaten only by Sunderland, who launched their two inshore lifeboats 111 times and rescued 135 people.

RNLI Operations Director Michael Vlasto said: “The message is clear, plan your trip to the coast and make sure you’re aware of local conditions.”
