Islamic centre plans for shop

The owner of a shop on one of Preston’s busiest roads wants to turn it into an Islamic education centre.

The owner of the property in New Hall Lane, Fishwick, has applied to the city’s council for permission to create the centre in a vacant retail shop.

He said it will be used to provide “a small facility where women and children of the local community can congregate daily.”

The application added: “The intended use of will be counselling, English and Arabic classes, a drop-in advice centre for the elderly, youth educational awareness classes and guest speeches with an Islamic teaching and background.”

He said the facility would be for use by the local community and said it would attract people “who are generally within a walking distance of the site.”

The application is for the change of use of the building from a shop to an educational centre to “serve local Muslim ladies of the community.”

The owner added: “We are not intending or expecting people from outside of the local area to attend the centre.”

It will not involve any changes to the outside of the building, including windows and doors.

A decision will be made by the council’s planning officers using delegated powers within the next three months.

I don't see anything wrong with this, why should it be an issue? It's only reported to get white van man even more annoyed.

Many Prestonians have concerns that this important gateway route into the city is increasingly beginning to look like an Asian shopping street.. No problem with Asian ownership of businesses etc, but in the interests of integration and open communications, as well as respect for the heritage of the local area, it clearly needs to be a condition of planning permissions that only English names should be used on premises.
