A hospital boss is leading by example by devoting her time to raising funds for the LEP Lifesaver Appeal.

Karen Partington, chief executive of Lancashire Teaching Hospitals Trust, which runs the Royal Preston and Chorley and South Ribble hospitals, has raised more than £2,000 for the appeal which aims to raise £500,000 for a CT scanner for Royal Preston Hospital’s emergency department which has become the trauma centre for the area. Karen, who recently celebrated her 50th birthday with a party, decided she didn’t want any presents and asked guests to make a donation to the appeal instead. Karen, who is married with two chldren, said: “I decided that when you get to 50, what do you actually need - apart from a facelift and I didn’t think I would get enough money for that!

“I have never wanted a birthday party before, but my family felt I needed to have one for my 50th and I had a great time.

“Everyone was very generous with their donations and my 50th party raised around £1,300 for the Lifesaver Appeal.”

Karen also decided to take part in the Guild 10k run to raise sponsorship for the appeal.

Karen, who had never run a race before, took part in the event with her sons Oliver 16 and Miles, 15, and managed to complete it in 63 minutes.

Karen said: “I thought that in my 50th year, I should do something I had never done before so I put myself forward for the 10k.

“I only started training three weeks before the run and I found the last 2k really hard going as it was all uphill.

“But the adrenaline kept me going and I was thrilled to get more than £700 in sponsorship.

“I want to thank everyone who supported me with donations both at my party and through sponsorship. A lot of the consultants and doctors put their hands in their pockets and made generous donations.”
