A housing association which owns hundreds of properties across Preston is looking at building new homes for old people in the city.

The Community Gateway Association is looking at building accommodation which would allow people to have care provided in affordable homes.

The association has embarked on a major house-building drive which has seen it build 25 family homes in Fishwick and 15 properties on Howarth Road, Ashton, this year.

Chief executive Diane Bellinger said the group wanted to bring down the number of people on waiting lists for homes in the city. She said: “There are a lot of people on waiting lists in Preston and the priority at the moment is two-bedroom family homes.

“We are also looking at building more housing for the elderly, when we took over the housing stock (in 2003) we
demolished four sheltered
accommodation blocks because they were not fit for purpose.

“We had people sharing
bathrooms and properties which were just not suitable, the best thing to do was demolish them.

“But, we recognise there is a need for accommodation for the elderly with additional care
provision and that is something we are looking at.”

The association has recently started work at The Larches, a
development of 22 family homes being built for it by Garstang-based Hollinwood Homes.

The scheme follows developments of 25 homes at Patterdale Close,
Fishwick as part of a £2.7m
development and built further homes on Adelphi Street in the city centre before opening Howarth Road earlier this month.

The chief executive said it
expected to take the overall number of new homes built in the city to 98 by the end of 2013.

She said: “This is not about building big estates, we are
working on small sites where the accommodation previously has not been fit for purpose.

“What we are building is
high-quality family homes
suitable for the 21st Century.”
