Gill Green and Debbie Cookson celebrating the success so far of the LEP fostering campaign

The Lancashire Evening Post’s campaign to urge more people to think about becoming foster carers has almost reached its target – in little over a month since its launch.

Our You Can Foster campaign was launched on October 3 to generate an extra 1,000 enquiries from potential foster carers within a six-month period.

But latest figures show that since the launch of the fostering campaign, Lancashire County Council’s fostering team has received 948 new enquiries from people interested in finding out more about becoming foster carers.

Requests for information have been a mixture of telephone and online enquiries.

Fostering chiefs at Lancashire County Council today welcomed the achievement. However, they are reminding people the need for more foster carers is as great as ever and want people to keep calling in to find out more about becoming a possible foster carer.

Not all initial enquiries about fostering result in the person becoming a foster carer. Every 1,000 initial enquiries will result in 100 new foster carers.

County Coun Susie Charles, cabinet member for children and schools said: “I am delighted to hear we’ve had so many phone calls and visits to our website in the past month and I’m sure the excellent coverage we’ve had in the Lancashire Evening Post has boosted that number. Please keep us in mind because the need doesn’t go!

“We always need more foster carers, but it may be that people who visit our website need time to think about whether fostering is for them.”

Gill Green, the manager in charge of recruiting foster carers for Lancashire, said: “We have been thrilled with the response to the campaign and hope many of the initial enquiries result in more people becoming foster carers.”

If local authorities want to recruit and retain quality foster carers they've got to start treating them better.
