Former criminal on police patrol
Latest news
A former criminal who spent more than 10 years in prison over drugs and theft offences is to go on patrol with Lancashire Police.
Jason Nice, 34, will go out with officers as part of a major drive to reduce burglary across the county.
He will be helping police to spot easy victims of burglaries.
Operation Julius will run until the end of March.
Between the ages of 16 and 28, Mr Nice was in and out of prison before he decided to turn his life around.
He is about to start a college course to become a mechanic.
He has been a volunteer with police for more than five years.
He said: “It was all about the drugs. I’d do anything for some quick cash.
“I was desperate. I was involved in burglaries, car theft and anything to fund my addiction.
“I suppose I felt like I didn’t really belong anywhere.
“I didn’t have a family and I wanted to be someone. I thought the only way I could do that was to commit crime.
“It sounds like a cliché but I genuinely had a penny dropping moment.
“I was just finishing a three year jail sentence and I was in the cell one day and I just thought enough is enough.”
