Former Bishop calls for new unity

CALL: Bishop ODonoghue

CALL: Bishop ODonoghue

The former Bishop of Lancaster has called for the creation of a body to promote “Christian unity.”

Patrick O’Donoghue, who served the Catholic Diocese of Lancaster which covered Lancashire, said a “truth and reconciliation commission” needed to be created by the church.

In an address marking the week of Prayer for Christian Unity within the church, he said the body would ask “key questions” facing the Christian church.

He said: “We will only have true ecumenism if Catholics and other Christian churches and communities together look at the bad things we have done to each other in the past.

“We need a commission, otherwise we are just playing at ecumenism by pretending that we have not got this past.

“We cannot airbrush our history out of existence with warm words and a positive spin on things.”

Bishop O’Donoghue, who is now living in Ireland, was replaced by current Bishop Michael Campbell in 2009.
