F1 driver Mansell moves out of the fast lane
PEDAL POWER: Nigel Mansell and friends passing through Lancashire
Retired racing driver Nigel Mansell has moved out of the fast lane and into the cycle lane.
Britain’s most successful Formula One driver passed through Lancashire yesterday during the Chester to Blackpool leg of a gruelling bike challenge.
Mansell, along with sons Leo and Greg, and former Tour de France racer Magnus Backstedt, cycled through Penwortham, near Preston, as they attempt to cover 1,300 miles in 13 days without a rest day.
They are promoting the Positive About Youth campaign, run by the UK Youth and Bike Club, which seeks to encourage the public to be more positive towards young people and to get communities excited about cycling.
Mansell, 56, who won 31 races during his Formula One career, said: “This is UK Youth’s centenary year and I want to do something challenging to mark it.
“We are one of the largest youth charities in the UK and every day we challenge young people to do all sorts of new things to raise their aspirations, so I want to do something demanding as well and encourage everyone to be more supportive of young people.”
Magnus Backstedt said: “This will be a test for me as well, as I will have to not only keep up the pace for 13 days for myself, but also monitor on my bike’s onboard computer how well the others are doing so I can maximise the best from them.”
