Dump zone in line for latest rubbish purge

CHALLENGE: yet more rubbish found last week

CHALLENGE: yet more rubbish found last week

A clean-up of an area plagued by fly-tippers is due take place.

Network Rail, which owns the land by Burrow Road in Deepdale, will carry the work out on March 15.

Staff will team up with Preston Council in a bid to clear the railway embankment and deter people from dumping rubbish.

The Evening Post reported last week that fly-tipped items include rubbish, car tyres, shoes, slippers, plastic bags, cans, bottles, a trampoline, wood and boxes.

A spokesman for Network Rail said: “We have cleaned it up numerous times.

“We usually provide the man power to clear the disused railway line and (the council) provides the man power and the skips, and usually a JCB-type vehicle, to actually remove the bags of rubbish we collect and take them to a recycling centre or landfill. It’s a joint effort.”

Network Rail and council staff will be joined by offenders under probation supervision to carry out the work as part of the community payback scheme.

Coun Ismail Bax, for Deepdale, said: “Fly-tipping has always been a problem in Deepdale.

“The railway has always been a problem, not just on Burrow Road.

“People being people, they still seem to chuck all their big items down the railway track rather than taking it to the tip.”

He said alley gates in the Canaries area of Deepdale had gone some way to solving the fly-tipping problem in the back streets but the railway line was an ongoing concern.

Twice in 2010 Preston Council and Network Rail joined forces to clean up the fly-tipping mountain, alongside the former railway line which was last used in 2000 to serve the former Deepdale Power Station with coal trains.

They removed mattresses, litter and bags of rubbish thrown over the fence and down the embankment, using specialised equipment.

A previous clean-up operation, in December 2009, saw workmen take away two trailers of rubbish from the line.

In 2005, Preston Council issued a notice telling the rail company it had 60 days to clear the embankment of a batch of fly-tipped rubbish.

In March, it is expected more than 20 people will take part in the clean-up operation.

Anyone who witnesses fly-tipping can contact or Preston Council on 01772 906909 or Network Rail on 08457 11 41 41.
