Doctors in the Preston area will take over healthcare planning and buying in April.

From April 2013, as part of the government health reforms, primary care trusts will no longer exist and Clinical Commissioning Groups (CCGs) will be taking over their functions.

NHS Greater Preston Commissioning Group and NHS Chorley and South Ribble CCG are now firmly on the way to taking over local healthcare commissioning from NHS Central Lancashire the primary care trust in April 2013.

The CCGs have been authorised by the NHS Commissioning Board to become statutory NHS organisations.

Both CCGs will oversee Greater Preston, Chorley and South Ribble’s local commissioning budget and decide how services will be designed and delivered. The new GP led clinical commissioning system will focus on improving patient safety, quality, innovation, public participation and patient experience.

There will be 211 CCGs across the country.

Jan Ledward, chief officer for both CCGs said: “By sharing resources across both CCGs, we are enhancing our expertise.”

Dr Ann Bowman is chairman of NHS Greater Preston CCG and a GP in Longridge. She said: “We have designed ways all individuals can have their say on local healthcare decisions.”

Dr Gora Bangi, chairman of NHS Chorley and South Ribble CCG and a Leyland GP, said: “We are passionate about making this a success.”
