Work has started on the demolition of a Preston mosque as trustees prepare to award a contract to build a new facility.

Demolition crews began stripping out the interior of the Masjid-e-Salaam on Watling Street Road, Fulwood, last week and work has now begun on removing the roof of the building.

It is understood the Preston Muslim Society has agreed to hand the contract to build a new modern mosque to an unnamed local building firm.

A spokesman said the building would be made with “only the best materials” and to a high specification to ensure it sticks to planning permission granted earlier this year.

He confirmed the building would be “dismantled piece-by-piece” rather than being bulldozed by demolition crews in a bid to avoid disruption.

The gates to the former hotel building are secured to avoid any thieves attempting to salvage parts of the building. During a two-year building programme, the society has applied to open a temporary mosque on a site on nearby Sharoe Green Lane, once earmarked for a new building.

The trustees expect work to take around two years to complete with the new building expected to be “water-tight” within 12 months.

The new-look mosque, which trustees say will be a fit-for-purpose facility, was approved following a long-running planning row.
