County highways chiefs deny ‘gritting bias’

Highways chiefs have denied claims that part of Lancashire has been neglected by gritters as heavy snow fell across the county.

County Coun David Whipp, who represents the Barnoldswick area of East Lancashire at County Hall, says he received an email stating secondary roads in central Lancashire, including Preston, South Ribble and Chorley, have been treated but those in East Lancashire have not.

But a statement from Lancashire County Council has denied that is the case.

County Coun Tim Ashton, highways and transport cabinet member at LCC said: “Coun Whipp has misinterpreted the situation.

“While our fleet of 26 vehicles in East Lancashire worked to keep the main routes clear, many of the secondary routes were treated by a reserve of agricultural contractors which we can bring in to help when conditions are particularly bad.

“We have a duty to keep traffic moving and always commit the resources needed to achieve this, which means we necessarily spend more to deliver the winter service in East Lancashire than any other part of the county.”
