Concerns over rabbit theft

MISSING: Chloe with Kaos the rabbit, who has been stolen

A schoolgirl has been left distraught after thieves sneaked into the family’s garden and snatched her beloved baby pet rabbit from his hutch.

Seven month old Kaos, whom the family have reared from birth with his four other siblings, had been taken from the hutch he shares with his mum, dad and their other babies in the family’s garden on College Court, Plungington, Preston.

Heartbroken Chloe Winter, 12, was told about the theft by her mum Helen Tattler, who found the hutch open when she arrived home from work.

The family immediately launched an appeal on Facebook, with many outraged animal lovers sharing his picture on their own pages.

Helen, a teaching assistant, said: “ Chloe is distraught, she used to take him out on a lead. Everyone knows we have rabbits which makes us think the thief is local.

“We have had then babies since birth and are keeping all of them. I just hope he was taken by someone who wants a pet and not for something sinister.

“We don’t care how, why or who took him, we just want him back safe and no more will be said.”

Kaos was stolen between 3pm and 5.30pm on February 26.

Chloe’s auntie and uncle, who run Preston’s RSPCA shelter, have appealed on their Facebook page.

It came as a pet shop owner warned of a number of similar thefts over the last year at the same time of day.

Corinne Hanby, of Pets at the Park on Blackpool Road, said seven customers had told her their rabbits had been stolen.

She said: “There could be many reasons for the thefts, it might be that they are desperate for a pet, but they could also be used as bait for fighting dogs. That’s why people shouldn’t advertise rabbits for free on websites.”

Sgt Michelle Doughty of Lea Police said no reports had been received but encouraged people to call 101.
