City chef is still cooking

A former bouncer is slicing and dicing his way to the MasterChef finals.

Jay Tinker, a father-of-three from Banks, near Tarleton, is still in the running for the title, despite being on the losing side on last night’s show.

The 40-year-old was part of a five-strong team charged with coming up with taste-bud tempting ideas for a meal for 100 Jane Austen fans in Bath.

Each of them had just 20 minutes to survey a table groaning with ingredients and come up with a dish appropriate for the Austen era.

Jay, who runs a security company, served up a stunning recipe of chicken breast stuffed with chicken liver pate, buttered green beans and a pumpkin puree sauce.

But despite his best efforts, the other team won.

His culinary skills, however, have already secured him a place in the final 10, and he is keeping his fingers crossed that the next challenge won’t be his last on the popular programme.

He said: “I love everything about food and cooking. My dad was a very good cook and he used to give my mum a day off on Sunday.

“He would have me at his side helping him and taught me an awful lot. Then when I was 12 he died, but I just carried on cooking.”

Jay’s entry into the MasterChef challenge was down to his business partner Michael Oliver who sent in an application without telling him.

Jay said: “When someone rang me up from MasterChef I though it was a joke and then, before I knew it, I got through the screen test.”

Despite last night’s disappointing result Jay is looking forward to the next stage when his team cooks for more than 300 staff at a tractor factory.

As for who will win? He said: “It could be anyone.”
