Churches to stay open for prayers
HOPE: The Bishop of Lancaster, Michael Campbell
Catholic churches across Lancashire will be open throughout Lent, the Bishop of Lancaster has confirmed.
Bishop Michael Campbell said every church in the Diocese of Lancaster will be open every Wednesday between 7pm and 8pm for confession from the end of the month.
They will open from Wednesday, February 29 until Wednesday, March 31 for Catholics to confess.
Bishop Campbell welcomed Catholics from across the Diocese, which stretches from the Scottish border to the River Ribble in Preston, to join in the worship.
He said: “Every time someone returns to the Sacrament of Reconciliation, renewing their relationship with the Lord and the Church, there is celebration in heaven.”
He will meet with priests from across the Diocese at Rydal Hall, Cumbria tomorrow to brief them on the initiative, which is running under the name The Light is On for You.
Bishop Campbell added that he hoped the initiative, part of the upcoming Year of Faith announced by Pope Benedict last year, would encourage Catholics to return to the religion.
He said: “I hope this initiative may re-awaken the love of God in the lives of some of our brothers and sisters.”
