A charity that involves prisoners in cleaning and repairing unwanted bicycles has donated a cycle to a Chorley Community Housing (CCH) employee.
The gift was made by the Margaret Carey Foundation after it heard that Nathan Pilkington, an apprentice joiner with CCH, needed a bicycle to help him get to work.
Nathan, who lives in Chorley, was given the bike by Tony Smith from the foundation.
David Brown, the Foundation’s chief executive, said: “We’re pleased to be able to help Nathan who, because he is an apprentice on a low wage, was struggling to afford to buy a bicycle himself.”
Last year the Margaret Carey Foundation, which is based in Mid Sussex, recycled almost 800 bicycles, sending them as far afield as South Africa and the Ukraine as well as the north of England.
Richard Houghton, Director of Operations at CCH, said: “We’re very grateful to the Margaret Carey Foundation for this generous gift of a bicycle for Nathan.
“We’re particularly pleased to be able to work with a charity that is helping offenders to help others and at the same time develop a positive work ethic, gain useful skills and become better prepared for employment after release.”
