Preston’s under-threat Space Centre has been awarded two places at Ride London which takes place in the summer - and its looking for people to take part in the event.

The cycling event, organised on the back of the Olympics, will be held on August 3 and 4 with thousands of people representing a host of different charities from across the county.

The Space Centre, in Pedders Lane, Ashton, has two places up for grabs and is hoping a couple of friends will snap them up.

Fundraising coordinator Hilary Holden said: “If anybody wants to be the first cyclist to ever take part in this then we have two places but they need to raise £500 or more sponsorship money for Space.”

Sutcliffes Cycles in Ribbleton Lane, Preston, has joined forces with the Save our Space committee and has agreed to service the competitors’ bikes and offer guidance on the ride.

Ross McWilliam from Save our Space said: “This is a fabulous opportunity to be involved in the 2012 Olympics Legacy.

“Over 20,000 charity riders will be participating in a great weekend of activity in London. Riders will cycle through many of the sights of London and will be able to say they were a part of the Olympics Legacy.”

The Space Centre provides unique care and respite for adults and children with all types of disability.

A funding shortfall has suspended its expansion plans and threatened the centre’s future altogether.

Closure could leave disabled people, their carers and families without a crucial leisure and learning resource.
