West Lancashire Borough Council has given out 180 trees to residents as part of the Free Tree Scheme.

Some were also given to community organisations, one of which is the Friends of New Shoots, which is looking to develop the New Shoots Community Garden on the Poor Marsh site in Shore Road, Hesketh Bank.

Work began on the garden in January and the site has been planted with fruit trees, bushes and plants. It should soon br complete.

Chris Derby, secretary of New Shoots, said: “We are very grateful to all our volunteers that came down to help us plant all our fruit trees and fruit bushes.

“We are also very pleased the council let us have some trees through their free tree scheme.

“The trees will not only provide a wonderful splash of colour and a fantastic harvest, but they will also be a magnet for a rich diversity of wildlife.”

Councillor Martin Forshaw, portfolio holder for planning and development, said: “I am delighted that so many people have taken trees for their gardens through the council’s Free Tree Scheme. I’m also happy we have been able to help New Shoots Community Garden and other groups.

“The trees from the scheme will help improve our local environment and make West Lancashire an even more green and attractive place.”

Nearly 1,200 residents have taken up the council’s offer of free trees since the scheme started was first introduced in October 2008 and more than 4,300 trees have been planted.
