Pleased: Laura Geraghty and Nafysa Patel with their Police Commanders Commendations

Two charity workers have collected a top award for tackling hate crime across Lancashire.

Nafysa Patel and Laura Geraghty, from the Preston and Western Lancashire Racial Equality Council, collected a Police Divisional Commander’s Commendation from chief superintendent Tim Jacques for their part in launching a 15-minute DVD showing the consequences of ignoring attacks on minority groups.

The pair spearheaded the project, which involved Lancashire Constabulary and Lancashire County Council, to promote understanding across different communities and to reduce hate crime.

Nafysa said: “We are really pleased and grateful to have this award.

“You don’t do this work for awards but it is nice to be appreciated as a lot of hard work went into this DVD with next to no funding.”

Laura said: “This DVD was created by the people of Lancashire for the people of Lancashire as a means of conveying our message that identity based prejudice is not acceptable and can be very damaging to both society and individuals.”

The free DVD can be accessed online. Alternatively call 01772 885128 for more information.

The Racial Equality Council is on 0808 8087398.
