Armed robbers brandished a suspected hand gun at staff in a bookmakers.

Two men entered Betfred on Watling Street Road in Preston armed with what is believed to have been a handgun and demanded money.

They were handed a small quantity of cash and then ran from the shop.

The members of staff working in the shop at the time of the armed robbery were not hurt but have been left in a shaken state.

The robbery happened at around 8.10pm on Wednesday night - and comes at a busy time for bookmakers across the country because of the Cheltenham races.

Today detectives area appealing for anyone with information to come foreard.

Det Sgt Martin Pearson said: “Fortunately the two members of staff in the shop at the time were not injured but understandably have been left extremely shaken by what can only be described as a terrifying ordeal.

“I would appeal to anyone who was in the area at the time who may have seen these men or anyone acting suspiciously to contact police.”

The only description officers have at this stage is that the men were wearing dark clothing with their faces covered with what were thought to be scarves and one was noticeably taller than the other.

There were no customers in the shop at the time of robbery.

Anyone with any information should call Lancashire Police on the non emergency number 101.
