Anger over bin disappearances
Complaints: Councillors David Howarth and Tony Pimblett want to know why litter and dog bins are being removed throughout Penwortham
Dog walkers have been hanging bags of faeces on fences around Penwortham because bins have been removed.
Broad Oak Councillor David Howarth said: “There are several litter and dog bins that seem to have disappeared from Higher Penwortham.
“The bins that used to be positioned between Blundell Lane and Princes Road were never replaced after being set on fire, and more recently the bins at Priory Lane and Queensway have been taken down as well.
“Meanwhile, councillors have been receiving an increasing number of complaints about littering and dog mess in the area.
“People are telling us that there’s not enough dog and litter bins near Hurst Grange Park on Glenway and on Cop Lane.
“The latest bin to be removed is one at the entrance to Blashaw Woods on Blashaw Lane, where you can see the hole where it used to stand, and people are now hanging up bags of dog dirt on fences instead.
“There’s never been any explanation about where these bins are going.”
County Councillor Tony Pimblett said: “I have contacted South Ribble Borough Council about this matter and I’m still awaiting a reply from an officer.
“What I have been told though, is that there is a reappraisal of bins in the area, especially ones that aren’t used much.
“My concern is that they are removing bins that I know are being used.
“The particularly bad site is at the entrance to Blashaw Woods where the hole from the bin remains and people are just dumping rubbish in the hole instead.
“Dog dirt is a serious matter as it can contain a disease that can cause eye problems.”
Councillor Peter Mullineaux, South Ribble Borough Council cabinet member said:
“We provide around 1,000 bins across South Ribble and decisions on where they’re located are based on need - if an area needs bins we will provide them.
“We monitor the usage and if they’re not used we will move them to where they are needed.
“Now that this has been highlighted, we will keep a close eye on this area and if needed we will provide the necessary bins. We constantly review the need for bins in an area and welcome residents’ views on this issue.
“We currently have a borough-wide programme of replacing the old separate dog and litter bins with new dual purpose bins, which will make it more convenient for our residents.”
