The head of a business lobbying group has blasted Preston's bus station "an A1 eyesore."
Frank McKenna, chairman of Downtown Preston in Business, has called for the landmark building to be demolished to make way for the £700m Tithebarn redevelopment of the city centre.

It follows an appeal by Preston MP Mark Hendrick to stop the building being granted listed status following an application by the 21st Century Society.

In a column in lepbusinessweek supplement on Tuesday, Mr McKenna said the station must go.

He said: "It beggars belief that local people are actually campaigning
to have the thing listed.

"It is an A1 eyesore, a blot on the landscape and should be demolished
by the local authorities at the earliest opportunity.

"The fact that it is 'the largest bus station in Europe' is beside the
point.

"As well as being a monstrosity, it is a barrier to the progress Preston needs to make if it is to drag itself into the 21st century, as an attractive, business-friendly city, that has a transport infrastructure that can cope with the additional 3,000 people that the powers that be have aspirations to attract into Preston in future years."

Culture Minister Margaret Hodge told Mr Hendrick she would "look in detail" at all submissions she receives on the application in a House of Commons debate last week.

Read Frank McKenna's opinion in your lepbusinessweek supplement in Tuesday's Evening Post.

He's right. £700M of development should not be halted by some sentimental dewey-eyed pretence about architectural heritage for a piece of concrete, which is purely a pretext for preventing Preston moving into a higher economic gear.

Fortunately this man, whose sole aim is make money, has no say in the matter.

It doesn't matter if he is only in it for money, as what he says is right. The building is an eyesore and needs to go, but not be replaced by a smaller station in Manchester Road. It needs to be next to the railway station.

Thank Frank for some sense!

All those people who want to save this thing must be seriously twisted. Have you taken a good look at it recently - what a complete and utter shambles. The fact they have had to surround it with fencing says it all.

If the demolishers could also flatten the Guild Hall that would be great.

I don't want the thing to remain either, but to be called The head of a business lobbying group really doesn't have any sway with the decision makers. What do they lobby about? Things like this of course. If it wasn't for the LEP would you know about Fwank and his lobbying group?

I can forgive him and his Preston wanabbes trying to make money. The bus station is typical of everything wrong with Preston ugly, old, boring and a complete reminder that we live in a cultural backwater being run by and influenced by clueless visionless numpties. Bulldoze it now.

All very typical of McKenna, Hendrick & Co. Can’t see past the end of their noses or apply some proper thought, common sense or logic to the problem.

Yes, the Bus Station is an absolute mess & currently unfit for purpose. In fact, since the fencing arrived, it now looks like a prison camp. Which may be deliberate in an attempt to sway public opinion against it.

But just because something is a mess, you don’t just advocate getting rid of it. Unless of course you have another agenda.

It’s no good the likes of McKenna just going on about transport infrastructure and attracting an additional 3,000 people etc. to the area. There is no integrated transport structure. No plan. No nothing.

Long term and as part of such plan the Bus Station needs a complete makeover (and maybe a little change of usage) to enable it to become the central transport hub & transport interchange (with maybe a similar facility at the Railway Station in due course) in line, for example, with Bury.

To my knowledge, proposals for a comprehensive fully funded feasibility study of all the transport options available, (be they bus, guided bus, park & ride, Parry People Movers, train & tramway (rapid transport) etc. etc), have been around for well over 6 years now.

Such study remains the overriding and urgent priority and first step. But, to the public eye, at least, nothing has been done. Such is the lack of vision and real business acumen etc.etc. in the area!

And the Bus Station? If we simply can’t get past the - it’s an eyesore, pull it down – syndrome, then we have little hope left!!

The bus station has real architectural merit - just look at the current exhibition of photographs in the Harris Museum if you can't see it.
Problem is it is totally impractical as a modern day transport hub which is its sole raison d'etre - not to exist as a piece of post modern eye candy.

Beauty is in thee eye of the beholder. But there are plenty buildings in and around preston that look worse. But regardless of th asthetics, this building is an architechural monument that must be preserved.
If a new bus station is required to benefit the City, then so be it. but the present station could be cleaned up and re-invented as a retail outlet or office space. Goodness knows what a good architech could convert it to. plus it has the much needed car park that is essential to the city. Preston should be proud of this unique structure and preserve it for all time.

What is a monstrosity, is Preston councils Handling of the situation, and the people that think they someone, sticking their head into it. Yes Frank can have his say, but his say must be treated the same as our say. Is Frank an Elected member of Preston Council? No he is a boss of a company hoping to get a slice of the pie, so yes he wants it pulled down, because that will make him money. Well Frank get ur head of the polictical debate, because there is a conflict of interest in ur opinions. You benefit to gain. We the general Public will lose if the station is ripped down, but hey we got no money to make out of it so our opinions count for nothing.
